I've had a relationship with photography since my high school years when I discovered my school's unused darkroom. Making photographs helped me feel like I was somehow connected to everyone around me.
As a shy kid, it provided a safe way for me to interact with my classmates. For that reason, I was always more interested in making raw, unstaged images, focusing more on capturing the spirit of the moment.
Even though my photographic equipment has vastly improved, I still have the same perspective today. I want my images to convey the sense of being there, un-distilled so that the viewer can readily relate them to their own experiences.
I make many digital photographs, but my preference remains with film, especially medium format black and white. I'm currently exploring the use of alternate photographic processes, and how a process can contribute to the sentiment and mood of an image.
